HOW TO USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO PROMOTE BLOOD DONATION

Mobile phones (calls, sms)

DK: According to the latest survey 80% of donors have never visited DK blood donors website. It is not useful for mass recruitment, but it is effective for providing information about blood donation (E.G: schedule of mobile blood donation)

FI: Website provides statistics and information on what blood types are needed urgently as well as mobile donation schedules.

EE: In Estonia it is easy to publish information on news sites.

RO: It is useful to place links and banners on Red Cross and other websites with big number of visitors.

SG: MSN messenger is used to inform about blood donation news.

RO: Cooperation with mobile operator can be effective, as it is possible to send promotional sms to its subscribers.

IT: In Italy such practice is not allowed.

EE: in Estonia national TV and radio inform what type of blood is needed the most. The audience of these news usually are 30 – 60 years old people.

RO: Major media publish the information reluctantly. Computer game that involves blood issues that is distributed for free would be a nice way to reach young audience.

DK: Interest banks. People subscribed to them get the certain type of information and commercials.

Problems

EE: One of the problems is working hours of blood centres. Usually they are not suitable for working and studying people.

In Tartu blood centre is located in large hospital, so sometimes it is not easy to get a car parked.

LV: In Latvia one of major problems is the reluctance of employers to provide the time to their employees for blood donation. Media (TV, radio, websites) are quite friendly and publish the needed information regularly.

GR: Greece imports blood from Switzerland. Money spent on this purpose can be spent on new blood centres, hospitals, promotion of blood donation.

IT: Big parties for members of local organizations. National events for representatives of local organizations.

LT: In Lithuania special concerts, theatre performances are organized for blood donors.

FI: Special meals for blood donors, "Lifesaver" bags, publications in media.
